Niffe

Ancient name
Anfa, Anfa (early Portuguese)
Modern name
Dar al-Bayda, Dar al-Bayda / Casablanca
Modern country
Morocco
The city known as Dar al-Bayda, now the largest city in Morocco, has had many names over the centuries, many of them startlingly different. It is better known in the Anglophone world under its colonial name of Casablanca (thanks especially to the Hollywood film of the same name), but it was known into the 19th century under its Portuguese name of Anfa. Its medieval Italian name Niffe is a version of this. In Dati's day it was rising in importance as a port under the Marinid dynasty from their capital at Fez. Campbell #1815.
