The toponym Russia, as a description for the region occupied by the principalities of Kievan Rus', is first found in European sources in the 11th century. In Dati's day the most influential Russian states emerging from the Mongol takeover of the 13th century were the Grand Principality of Moscow and the Novgorod Republic (the easternmost port of the Hanseatic League). Their main connection to Mediterranean trade was the Volga River.
