Safi

Ancient name
Thymiaterium?
Modern name
Safi
Modern country
Morocco
Safi was already a busy port in the 12th century, serving as the main port for the Almoravids' and Almohads' capital at Morocco (Marrakesh). After the Marinids moved the capital to Fez, it remained a major trade port. It was conquered by the Portuguese in 1488, after Dati's time. Presumably due to the easily confused similarity between the letters f and long s in medieval scripts, the Sfera manuscripts contain spelling variants from safi to fassi. Campbell #1829.
