Sinope is a port built on an isthmus to a rocky outcrop, with bays on either side, on the southern shore of the Black Sea between Castelle and Simisso. Upon visiting in the 14th century, Ibn Battuta called it "a superb city which combines fortification with beautification." Campbell #1284; Gordeev 62–4.
